For more than six decades, Bob Mackie didn’t simply dress
some of the world’s biggest stars.
He helped create the versions of them audiences would never forget.
From Cher’s daring, barely-there gowns to Carol Burnett’s outrageous comedy costumes and Elton John’s glittering stage looks, Mackie understood something few designers ever mastered: clothes could become part of the performance…. Continue Reading ⬇️
They could make an audience laugh.
They could shock.
They could create glamour.
And sometimes, they could turn a single entrance into pop-culture history.
Now, Hollywood is mourning the loss of the legendary designer.
Mackie died Monday, September 14, in Palm Springs, California, at the age of 87. His representative later confirmed that he died from pneumonia.
His team announced the devastating news in a statement shared on his official social media account, reflecting on a man who had spent his life fulfilling the dream he had carried since childhood: becoming a fashion and costume designer.
They said his extraordinary designs would continue bringing beauty into the world long after his death.
And almost immediately, the stars whose images Mackie helped shape began saying goodbye.
Perhaps no tribute carried more emotional weight than Cher’s.
Their creative partnership stretched across decades and produced some of the most recognizable celebrity looks ever created.
Cher remembered her longtime friend with affection and the kind of humor that seemed perfectly suited to the man nicknamed the “Sultan of Sequins.”
She imagined Mackie arriving in heaven with his sequins, beads and sketch pad still with him, before offering a tender farewell to her “dear Bob.”
It was difficult to imagine one without the other.
Mackie understood Cher’s fearlessness.
Rather than trying to soften it, he amplified it.
Together they created looks that were glamorous, provocative, theatrical and occasionally controversial.
The point was never simply to make Cher look beautiful.
Mackie made sure people remembered what they had seen.
Their work helped redefine the possibilities of celebrity fashion, turning clothing into an extension of a performer’s identity.
But Cher represented only one chapter in an extraordinary career.
Mackie designed for an astonishing list of entertainment legends, including Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli, Bette Midler and Elton John.
His influence eventually reached younger generations as well, with modern stars including Miley Cyrus and Sabrina Carpenter embracing his unmistakable creations.
For Carol Burnett, however, Mackie wasn’t merely a famous designer.
He was part of the creative DNA of her television career.
Mackie designed costumes throughout the entire 11-season run of The Carol Burnett Show, creating everything from glamorous gowns to deliberately ridiculous outfits built around comedy sketches.
